Xerox Copiers in New Jersey: Lease Terms, Service Costs and What to Check Before You Renew
A Xerox locks itself to a metered or sold supplies plan at first cartridge, and switching it takes a code from Xerox.
Where the money actually goes on a Xerox
A Xerox device commits to a supplies plan — metered or sold — when the first cartridge goes in after the starter toner is depleted. Metered and sold cartridges are different part numbers, and the machine reads the type on the cartridge it is given: install the wrong one and it faults rather than printing. Changing that commitment afterwards requires a conversion code obtained from Xerox and entered at the panel or the embedded web server. Under Xerox’s cost-per-page programs, PagePack and eClick, service and supplies are folded into a single click, the device reports its own meter, and the supplies come off that contract rather than being bought separately. So on this line the consumable stream and the service arrangement are one decision rather than two, and part of that decision gets made at the machine rather than on paper.
What to check on a Xerox agreement
Xerox’s own PagePack program terms treat supplies as Xerox property until used, run a supply audit when a contract terminates or expires, and allow only one on-the-shelf spare per consumable item. Those are terms between Xerox and the dealer, not automatically terms between you and the dealer — so ask which of them your own agreement passes through to you, and get it in writing. The same applies to early termination: on the Xerox-to-dealer side it carries a per-device fee inside the first three years of coverage that falls away afterwards, with notice and an audit required either way, and nothing guarantees your contract mirrors that. Xerox’s program documentation also counts every impression as one click per side regardless of sheet size, tabloid included — worth confirming in the agreement rather than assuming, because it is not a universal convention.
What this line suits
An office that will run the device on one supplies arrangement for the whole term and does not expect to move between metered and sold partway through, since the plan is set at the machine at first cartridge and undoing it is an administrative step through Xerox rather than a purchasing decision. It suits less well where devices are added at different times through different channels, because each one carries its own plan commitment and its own conversion path.

Worth knowing about Xerox right now
Xerox completed its acquisition of Lexmark on July 1, 2025. On February 16, 2026 it announced a consolidated Xerox and Lexmark print go-to-market, effective Q2 2026, that keeps direct sales on enterprise and corporate accounts and moves small and mid-sized business coverage and hardware fulfillment to channel partners. If you are a smaller business in New Jersey that has always dealt with a Xerox representative directly, yours is the kind of account that changes hands — ask who holds your service contract and your supplies plan after the transition, and get the answer in writing.
Send me the agreement and I’ll tell you which of this actually applies to your machine and what the numbers should be. That’s free, and it doesn’t depend on whether you end up buying anything from me.
